Dinner Circle - Wednesday, February 28, 2007

Welcome to the February Dinner Circle! This month's event will be held on Wed. February 28, 2007 starting at 6:30 - 7:30 pm (times vary based on individual restaurant reservations - see details below). Since several of you have requested new restaurants and some variety in matching, this month's groups will meet in either Penn Quarter, Washington DC or Arlington, VA and we will use restaurant preferences as part of the matching process (see the questionnaire for details).

We will host a post-dinner reception starting at 9:00 pm at the bar at
PS7 in Penn Quarter.

Dinner Circle Details:

Have you been searching for the opportunity to meet and get to know other South Asian professionals in the Washington DC area? Are you the type that prefers small dinners with friends over raucous nights out at clubs? Well, then come participate in the Dinner Circle. These small group dinners are designed to provide comfortable, intimate settings where young professionals with similar interests can have meaningful conversations and expand their social and professional relationships. The dinners are primarily targeted at those with at least a few years of work experience, but all are welcome to attend.

Here's how it works: Please click on the link below if you'd like to attend and answer a few questions that will help us learn more about you. Once we have a list of all interested participants, we'll divide you up into groups of 6-8 and email each group the specific restaurant at which they should meet. Then, just show up ready to be social and enjoy a meal! There is no fee for the event, though you will have to pay for your share of the dinner.

Our commitment: We'll do our best to maximize the potential of the evening by thoughtfully matching participants with others of similar age, interests, and career stage. We'll also try to pick easily accessible, moderately priced restaurants that make the evening more enjoyable.

Your commitment: First, we ask that you show up to your assigned restaurant on time (that's Eastern Standard Time, not Indian Standard Time!). Second, because these groups are intended to be small, one or two people cancelling at the last minute can really disrupt the dynamic. Thus, we ask that you only sign up for the event if you're 100% sure that you'll be able to attend.

Here's the link:
http://www.netsap.kintera.org/dinner. The deadline to sign up is Saturday, February 24 at noon. Restaurant assignments will be sent out on Monday, February 26. If you have any questions or comments, e-mail:dinner@netsap.org .

KAHANI WRITING WORKSHOP:

Kahani is a writing workshop for aspiring South Asian fiction writers. If you'd like to hone your writing skills, meet some fun people, or just check out what we're all about, come see what it's all about! It's free to attend, and the workshop follows a semi-structured format, geared to help everyone get to know each other, with writing exercises and workshop assignments. Participants who bring pieces to workshop at this or subsequent workshops will be able to showcase their work at an upcoming semi-annual Kahani Night reading. So come join us!

Calling all actors and actresses!

For Holi, we thought it would be nice to put on a play for our children. We will be performing a Panchatantra play that teaches us a moral lesson.  The lesson of the play will be, Never underestimate anybody, however small he may be. Characters in this play include elephants, mice, and some men.  We need about 15-20 adults, male and female.

It is a pretty simple play so we will not require much practice but we will require organization and costume coordination.  We can meet once a week, either late (8:30PM) on a weeknight or Sunday afternoons. We can choose the location based on the cast and what would be convenient for everyone.

If you are interested in performing or helping out with this production in anyway, please write back to and someone will contact you with further details.

SALSA presents THEATER FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION TRAINING

Activists often do theater that is heavy on content but short on appealing form. The result is a poster, mask and puppet display with lots of words, rather than theater. Capturing people's interest with some cool theater to convey socially relevant messages is an art that often works better than speeches in educating and building alliances. It need not be expensive or very time consuming. It does not require a huge performance space and with training and experience, activists can learn how to turn any space – a classroom, railway station, the street or a corridor – into an effective performance area. Come, learn from a highly skilled and experienced practitioner of educational theater how to put together basic activist plays with the help of time-tested techniques and fun exercises for voice, movement, presentation and script development. It will be an invigorating and memorable SALSA evening. Note: Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes that will give you the freedom of physical movement needed for the exercises.

Led by Shirin Shirin:
Shirin Shirin from Justice in South Asia (JiSA). Shirin has over two decades of experience doing theater for public education on issues ranging from HIV-AIDS to globalization. She teaches theater at schools and universities and works with non-governmental groups that use theater for public outreach. She has developed her own training techniques and besides the US, has taught and performed in India, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines and Australia. Shirin will be supported by Sameer and Basav from JiSA.

When: Thursday, February 22, 2007
