SALSA presents THEATER FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION TRAINING
Activists often do theater that is heavy on content but short on appealing form. The result is a poster, mask and puppet display with lots of words, rather than theater. Capturing people's interest with some cool theater to convey socially relevant messages is an art that often works better than speeches in educating and building alliances. It need not be expensive or very time consuming. It does not require a huge performance space and with training and experience, activists can learn how to turn any space – a classroom, railway station, the street or a corridor – into an effective performance area. Come, learn from a highly skilled and experienced practitioner of educational theater how to put together basic activist plays with the help of time-tested techniques and fun exercises for voice, movement, presentation and script development. It will be an invigorating and memorable SALSA evening. Note: Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes that will give you the freedom of physical movement needed for the exercises.
Led by Shirin Shirin:
Shirin Shirin from Justice in South Asia (JiSA). Shirin has over two decades of experience doing theater for public education on issues ranging from HIV-AIDS to globalization. She teaches theater at schools and universities and works with non-governmental groups that use theater for public outreach. She has developed her own training techniques and besides the US, has taught and performed in India, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines and Australia. Shirin will be supported by Sameer and Basav from JiSA.
